Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Box Office Collection: Even after 36 years, ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ is breaking records at the box office

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Box Office Collection

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is smashing box office records, and its opening weekend has been phenomenal. This film is a sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 horror-comedy, with legacy stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara returning. This time, they’re joined by new cast members like Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci. The film’s budget was around $100 million, so it must earn over $250 million to be profitable.

According to Variety, by Saturday morning, the film is projected to rank No. 1 at the domestic box office, with a 3-day opening weekend total of $97 million or more. Its first-day earnings were $41.5 million, making it the second-highest September opening day in history, behind 2017’s It ($50.4 million). It’s also Tim Burton’s biggest opening day, surpassing his 2010 film Alice in Wonderland, which made $40.8 million on its opening day.

If the movie achieves the $97 million 3-day total, it will be the second-biggest September opening weekend, only behind It ($123 million). Additionally, it would be the third-highest opening weekend of 2024, following Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million) and Deadpool & Wolverine ($211.4 million).

This makes it clear that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is on track to become a huge hit, potentially breaking more records in the future.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: What does the strong opening weekend mean?

The release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice could exceed expectations, as the film has already outperformed the original Beetlejuice movie’s entire earnings within just three days. The 1988 version, which was the 10th highest-grossing film worldwide that year, earned about $75 million during its run.

By Sunday evening, the 2024 sequel will have easily surpassed that by at least $20 million. Adjusting for inflation, the original film’s earnings would be equivalent to about $202.5 million today. Given the strong performance, it seems likely that the sequel will also reach or exceed this figure soon.

This demonstrates that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is not just a sequel, but a major blockbuster, surpassing the original’s box office success by a wide margin.

The strong opening weekend of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice shows that the movie is close to recovering its production cost and is on track to earn profits. Once the international box office earnings are reported on Sunday, the total will likely increase significantly. However, since it’s a comedy— a genre that doesn’t always resonate well globally due to cultural differences in humour— and it’s a nostalgia-driven blockbuster without the backing of a recent major franchise, it may perform better in North America compared to other regions.

This indicates that while the film might face challenges in the international market, its performance in the domestic market is expected to remain strong.
